What is LTE?

The International Telecommunication Union (ITU), the United Nations agency regulating information and communication technology issues, has set requirements for each generation of wireless technology. What matters here most is speed. To satisfy fourth-generation (4G) requirements, the download speed should be 1 Gbps for stationary use and 100 Mbps for mobility communication."

Ten healthcare and educational institutions in Maine are sharing more than $3 million in federal funds to advance distance learning and telemedicine programs designed to benefit the state's rural communities.

Maine received the most money of any state in what is described as a highly competitive grant program, and had the largest number of award recipients. Jonathan Adelstein of the U.S. Department of Agriculture says the funds will give residents of rural areas access to world-class educational and health care opportunities.

Among the award recipients is the Rangeley School Department, which is getting just over $440,000 to provide 23 schools with video conference equipment to aid the department's special education program.

Social media in healthcare

Hospitals have increasingly turned to social media over the past few years to connect with patients and get their messages out, a trend that’s virtually certain to grow.

Here, are a few — though certainly not comprehensive — examples of innovative uses of social media in healthcare.Last summer, Seattle’s Swedish Medical Center, which along with Mayo Clinic is generally regarded as among the top healthcare social media innovators among hospitals, drew attention for hosting what it called the first-ever “Sleep up.” The event, which consisted of an all-night live stream following a patient undergoing sleep disorder testing and a Twitter Q&A session with physician sleep specialists, drew 10,000 visitors. “Our goal is to reach people with information when they need it,” said Dana Lewis, Swedish’s interactive marketing specialist. For those suffering from sleep disorders, that time was when most of the rest of us were in bed.
