Ten healthcare and educational institutions in Maine are sharing more than $3 million in federal funds to advance distance learning and telemedicine programs designed to benefit the state's rural communities.

Maine received the most money of any state in what is described as a highly competitive grant program, and had the largest number of award recipients. Jonathan Adelstein of the U.S. Department of Agriculture says the funds will give residents of rural areas access to world-class educational and health care opportunities.

Among the award recipients is the Rangeley School Department, which is getting just over $440,000 to provide 23 schools with video conference equipment to aid the department's special education program.
